<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device which suppresses overheat at a light emitting spot while it can emit high-intensity light, and forms illuminating light suitable for uniformization and conversion of polarized light, and also to provide a projector using the same. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A plurality of light source lamp units 21a and 21b are arranged symmetrically, and made to emit light to the same light condensing point, and a collimating optical system 24 having the light condensing point as a focus is used, whereby light source light beams from the plurality of light sources are collectively collimated. Thus, a pair of fly-eye lenses 25 and 26 are used as a uniformizing optical system. By using the fly-eye lenses 25 and 26, a polarized light conversion element 27 having a PBS array is used when the illuminating light is used for the projector 10, whereby the light is efficiently utilized.
