<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head rest device for a vehicle capable of making compatible hardness required at a rear-end collision of the vehicle and softness required for comfortability without giving an incompatible sense. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The head rest device for the vehicle is provided with a frame member 31 for forming a skeleton of a head rest 4 while having an opening 31a opened in a seat longitudinal direction at a central part; a cushion 5 having a peripheral edge supported on the frame member 31 to cover the opening 31a and capable of shock-absorbing a load inputted from a head of an occupant; a head support plate 30 arranged at a rear side of a cushion 5 while opposing the opening 31a and having a support surface 30a capable of supporting the load by the head of the occupant inputted to the cushion 5; and a movement mechanism 20 for moving the head support plate 30 between a reference position where the support surface 30a is brought into a contact state with the cushion 5 and a retreating position where the support surface 30a is brought into a leaving state from the cushion 5.
