The present invention provides compounds, compositions and methods for promoting bone growth. Compounds useful in the methods of the present invention include the following: wherein R1 and R2 are each H or C1-6 alkyl. X is C1-6 alkylene. R3 is H, -OR4, -OC(O)R4, -OC(O)NR4R5, -OC(O)OR4, -OP(O)(OR4)2 or -OC(O)(CH2)2C(O)OH. R4 and R5 are each independently H or C1-20 alkyl. The compounds also include salts, hydrates and isomers of the compounds.
