<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transmitter-receiver for notifying a caller of the reason why the call cannot be received during viewing. <P>SOLUTION: A message table part 15 stores a corresponding response message for each category indicated by category information. During viewing, that is, while a video/sound signal decoding part 14 converts contents received from a data separation part 12 to video signals and sound signals and outputs them to a video output device 2, when a call control part 16 detects a call, a central processing part 22 acquires the category information of a program being viewed from a program information analysis part 13, and reads the response message corresponding to the category indicated by the category information from a first response message table 31 stored in the message table part 15.
