PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink cartridge monitoring system and an ink cartridge monitoring method, improving usability by performing no warning, even if a non-genuine ink cartridge is installed to a printer, as long as the use thereof is permitted once. SOLUTION: The printer 1 comprises: an EEPROM 13 which stores permission information showing whether to permit use of an ink cartridge in association with identification information identifying the ink cartridge; a main control part 10 which detects the identification information of the ink cartridge installed to the printer, and refers to the memory upon receipt of a predetermined instruction to determine whether to perform warning based on the permission information corresponding to the identification information; and a panel part 18 which performs warning when it is determined to perform warning.
