PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To use a method in real time and achieve the method by a cheap onboard computer, in methods for estimating the state of charge of a battery installed on a motor vehicle. SOLUTION: A modeled voltage comprising at least one component corresponding to the charge amount of the battery and at least one component corresponding to the polarization of the battery is determined by a theoretical model. Adaptation is performed for the theoretical model according to the operating phase of the battery and a determined voltage error, and adaptation is performed for the theoretical computation of the state of charge of the battery and/or for the computation of the component corresponding to the polarization state of the battery.
