<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric connector having ground plates whose holding strength of its ground plates is high and its contact reliability is high. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the electric connector, a housing 31 protrudes from its upper wall portion 31A toward the engaging direction with a mating connector 10, and it has an engaging portion 32 which proceeds into the engaging space of the mating connector 10. The engaging portion 32 holds ground plates 36 with the plate surfaces of both its sides, and in the engaging portion 32, a receiving groove portion 33 extending in the engaging direction is formed in the predetermined position which locates in the inside of the plate surface of the ground plate 36 and in the orthogonal direction to the engaging direction, so as to receive the mating groove elastic piece of the mating connector 10 in it. In the ground plate 36, slits 38 extending in the engaging direction in the receiving groove portion 33 are formed. The groove edges of the slit 38 form a protrusive linear-way portion 37A for contacting with the mating ground plate of the mating connector 10, so as to protrude from the opposite inner surfaces of the receiving groove portion 33.
