PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbodiimide compound capable of improving water resistance, solvent resistance and adhesiveness while having a pot life nearly equal to that of the conventional one when added to water-based resin as a crosslinking agent, to provide a carbodiimide composition, and to provide a water-based coating composition. SOLUTION: The water-soluble or water-dispersible carbodiimide compound is obtained by introducing methyl glycolate or methyl lactate having a structure similar to that possessed by a water-based urethane-based resin, a water-based acrylic resin or the like to the terminal when making a carbodiimide compound aqueous.
