PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display element constituted by simple members, capable of being driven by low voltage, achieving high contrast in display in black, reducing fluctuation of color tone in display in black, and displaying in color. SOLUTION: This display element has electrolyte and white-colored scattered substances between opposing electrodes. Two kinds of compounds expressed by the following formula (L) (wherein, R1<SB>1</SB>denotes a substituted or non-substituted aryl group, R1<SB>2</SB>and R1<SB>3</SB>denote hydrogen atom or substituent each, X>N-R1<SB>4</SB>, and X denotes oxygen atom or sulfur atom and R1<SB>4</SB>denotes hydrogen atom or substituent) are fixed on at least either of the opposing electrodes. By applying voltage V<SB>1</SB>(V) between the opposing electrodes, the compound expressed by the first type of formula (L) is colored to display in red, green or blue. By applying voltage V<SB>2</SB>(V) between the opposing electrodes further while the compound expressed by the first type of formula (L) is colored, the compound expressed by the second type of formula (L) is colored to display in black.
