RESISTANCE TO POLYPHENON E DUE TO INCREASED BCL-2 EXPRESSION

The present invention discloses BCL2 gene and protein expression are significantly higher in cancer cells resistant to the growth inhibitory effects of Polyphenon E (Poly E), and decreasing BCL2 expression or activity would restore sensitivity to Poly E. These results indicate that BCL2 could be a marker of resistance to Poly E and could be used to identify patients who may not benefit clinically from treatment or prevention with Poly E. Furthermore, treatment regimens that combine Poly E and BCL2 inhibitors may be effective against cancers with high BCL2 expression.
