<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it hard to recognize, from the contour of an image reader, that a light source for reading a code image is packaged therein, and to improve the irradiation efficiency of light from the light source which irradiates a document, in an image reader. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A full-rate carriage 20 comprises a visible light source 22 that irradiates the side of a document P with visible light, an infrared light source 23 that irradiates the side of the document P with infrared light, and a dichroic mirror 24 having characteristics that transmits infrared light and reflects visible light. The dichroic mirror 24 is mounted obliquely to the principal surface of platen glass 12 and reflects a part of light outputted from the visible light source 22 toward a document image reader. Furthermore, the dichroic mirror 24 is disposed to shield the infrared light source 23 when viewed from the side of platen glass 12. Thus, it can be made difficult for a user or the like to recognize the presence/no presence of the infrared light source 23 by the characteristics of the dichroic mirror 24 which reflects the visible light.
