<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a radiography apparatus capable of changing the position and direction of a radiation source and a detection means according to the position and posture of a subject such as a patient, and capable of avoiding collision with an obstacle when moved. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The radiography apparatus comprises a cart and a detector holding mechanism. The cart comprises a means for setting the target position and direction of the cart inside a radiation room; a cart moving means for moving the cart to the target position and in the target direction; a power source of the cart; a cart self-propelled running control means; a cart position detecting means for detecting the position and direction of the cart; and an obstacle detecting means for detecting the approach of the obstacle by measuring the distance to the obstacle present in the direction of advancement of the cart. The detector holding means comprises a means for setting the target position and direction of a detector for detecting the radiation penetrating the subject; a detector free holding arm for moving the detector to the target position and in the target direction; a power source for operating the arm; a detector movement control means; and a detector relative position detecting means for detecting the position of the detector relative to the cart.
