<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To comfortably play back contents by constructing a scheme for extracting, storing and deleting caption information cooperatively with a recording/deleting operation of contents. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A content recording section 13 records contents on a recording medium 20 together with time information to display the contents. A caption extraction section 14 extracts caption data from contents to be recorded or from contents recorded on an external recording medium. A caption storage section 15 stores the extracted caption data on the recording medium 20 together with time information to display the caption data as caption information. When a caption playback section 22 plays back the caption information from the recording medium 20, a caption cooperative playback section 23 causes a content playback section 21 to play back contents having time information matched with the time information of designated caption information by retrieving the contents from the recording medium 20.
