The method involves testing the dimmer at a point of time between the application of the phase angle-control signal to the load and a current zero-point which is to be estimated. The current zero-point examines whether a premature decay of the load current is available. The dimmer is adjusted permanently to a phase angle control, if the determined value exceeds the phase shift during lagging load current or if a premature decay of the load current is available. An independent claim is included for a dimmer for automatic detection of load attached to a dimmer and for automatic assignment of a control method by the dimmer.
