摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a collision detection structure capable of determining the side of occurrence of any collision by one acceleration sensor, and to provide an occupant protection system having the collision detection structure to adequately protect an occupant. <P>SOLUTION: A side impact detection system 10 comprises: a side impact-detecting G sensor 24 provided on a floor tunnel; a two-stage load transmitting unit 30 for transmitting the load associated with a left side collision to the side impact-detecting G sensor 24 so that the load or the rate of load change at a predetermined impact speed differs between the first-stage and the second-stage; a two-stage load transmitting unit 40 for transmitting the load associated with a right side collision to the side impact-detecting G sensor 24 so that the load or the rate of load change at a predetermined impact speed differs between the first-stage and the second-stage; and a controller 20 for determining the side of occurrence of the side impact based on the signal from the side impact-detecting G sensor.
