PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for detecting a nitrogen-containing substance. SOLUTION: In the method and apparatus for detecting a nitrogen-containing substance in an area to be detected, gamma rays is radiated from nitrogen element contained in the nitrogen-containing substance present in the area by irradiating the area to be detected with neutrons; and annihilation gamma rays radiated when positrons generated by electron pair creation of the gamma rays undergo electron pair annihilation, is measured. Thus, it is possible to provide the method and apparatus for detecting a nitrogen-containing substance, small and simple, and suitable for mine detection in an area like a mountain area or slope land where a large crane cannot go into.
