<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning device maintaining a good cleaning performance over a long period, and also to provide a charging device, a cartridge, and an image forming apparatus, each equipped with the cleaning device, thereby maintaining an image-formation quality over a long period. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When a detection result obtained by a temperature/humidity detection part 122 shows a prescribed high temperature/humidity state, a cleaning operation is performed while bringing the wiping part 121a of a cleaning member 121 in contact with a discharge wire 110 by a motor switching part 123 comprising a motor 123a and a slide mechanism 123b. When the detection results obtained by the temperature/humidity detection part 122 show a prescribed low temperature/humidity state, the cleaning operation is performed while bringing the polishing part 121b of the cleaning member 121 in contact with the discharge wire 110 by the motor switching part 123.
