A method of diagnosis or prognosis of wound development, comprising the step of measuring in a sample of nucleic acid for the presence of a polymorphism consisting of an adenosine (A) to guanosine (G) substitution at position -82 in the MMP-12 gene promoter. Also provided are methods of diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, wound treatment systems and devices and kits for use in such methods.
