PURPOSE: An air conditioner for a vehicle and a method of controlling the same is provided to prevent smell from being generated due to being mixed with bad smell of low concentration by increasing the aroma intensity at initial time of the operation of the air conditioner. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner for a vehicle comprises an air conditioning unit, an aroma module, an emission unit, and a main controller. The air conditioning unit(100) heats and cools the air. The aroma module(270) performs the aroma function. The emission unit(300) controls the intensity and the discharge time of the aromatic agent(273) discharged from the aroma module. The main controller(290) controls the emission unit by increasing the discharge intensity of the aromatic agent discharged from the aroma module when the air conditioning unit is turned on and off.
