A method of selecting a communication technology from among a plurality of communication technologies, for transmission of a communication, the communication originally being transmitted according to a particular protocol, comprising the steps of:
determining that the communication is one which is to be sent according to a communication technology having a protocol other than the particular protocol;
determining communication characteristics of the communication;
comparing communication characteristics against respective sets of criteria for each of the plurality of communication technologies;
selecting a candidate set of communication technologies from the plurality of communication technologies, one of which being useable to send the communication.
