[Class 39 (ii).] Electric incandescent lamps connected in strings or festoons are provided with leading- in wires 12 which extend through the bulb and are connected at their ends to the ends of wires 16 which connect the lamps in series, the junction of the wires 12, 16 being enclosed in a plastic material which is moulded and hardened around a portion of the lamp bulb. Preferably the moulded material comprises a synthetic resin, for example either of those known under the Registered Trade Marks " Bakelite " and " Durite," together with a hardening-compound such as hexamethylenetetramine, and a non-compressible filler such as alumina, magnesia, silica, or marble flour. The connecting-wires 16 preferably consist of wire strands with an insulating covering 17, the ends of the strands being placed over or in contact with the ends 14 of the leading-in wires 12 which may be bent to extend at right-angles to the neck 13 of the bulb 10, the extreme ends of the conductors 16 being bent back to ensure a firm joint with the material of the moulded base 18. The arrangement is modified for double-ended elongated bulbs with a longitudinal filament connected to conductors secured in position by moulded material at each end of the bulb. The material is moulded upon the bulb by placing the neck within a two-part mould with the conductors extending through grooves provided therein, the plastic material then being inserted within a vertical passage and forced downwardly by a plunger, the mould subsequently being heated to set the materials.</p> |
