It is possible to provide a power supply system which includes a fuel cell as an energy source of a high energy density and a high output density and can cope with drastic fluctuations of power consumption by using simple means. In the power supply system (10), the fuel cell (1) is connected to an input terminal of a DC/DC converter (2) and a lithium ion secondary cell (3) and a load (4) are connected in parallel to an output terminal of the DC/DC converter (2). The system further includes a voltage measuring device (6) for measuring a terminal voltage of the secondary cell (3) and a microcomputer (5) for controlling and setting a target output voltage of the converter (2). The target output voltage is set slightly higher than the terminal voltage. The fuel cell (1) is operated under the generation condition at which the best fuel conversion efficiency can be obtained. Thus, the system formed by the fuel cell (1) and the converter (2) functions as a constant voltage/current source which outputs the power generated by the fuel cell (1) with the voltage identical to the terminal voltage of the secondary cell (3). The excess and deficiency of the output current and the current driving the load (4) are automatically adjusted by charge/discharge of the secondary cell (3).
