Provided is a light diffusing member having excellent optical transparency and light resistance, and has excellent light diffusing characteristics even with a small quantity of filler added. A method for manufacturing such light diffusing member is also provided. The light diffusing member contains ceramic particles in a base material. The ceramic particle composition contains 80 weight% or more of MgO and Al2O3 in total, and the weight ratio of MgO to Al2O3 (MgO/Al2O3) is 0.05-5.
