<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup element suitable to control the reading timing of pixel signals by setting a sleep period of reading processing. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image pickup element 100 includes a read-reset line address generating section 13 for generating a plurality of addresses indicating the position of a line of a sensor cell to be processed on the time division basis during one horizontal scanning period; a driving pulse generator 14 for generating a signal for driving the sensor cell of the selection line: a sensor cell array 15; and a horizontal transfer section 16 for outputting the read data of the image signal per line. The read-reset line address generating section 13 includes the same number of selection line address generating circuits as the number of time-divisions, and can independently control the generating circuits. Further, in a control section 1321, a reading sleep period is set in repeating reading processing of the pixel signal, and the pixel signal is read from a line of an OB region in the reading sleep period.
