PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a virtual tape device and the control method of the virtual tape device for efficiently restoring/saving the data of a physical tape volume to a logical tape volume. SOLUTION: As shown by Fig.4, the virtual tape device 200 interposed between a host and a library device equipped with a physical tape volume is configured to store data to be transmitted from the host in a logical tape volume, and provided with: a reception part for receiving a mount/unmount instruction to be transmitted from the host and a job identifier related with the instruction; a storage device for storing the logical tape volume; a storage table for storing the job identifier and the logical tape volume as the object of access of the job; and a control part 230 for controlling shift control between the logical tape volume and physical tape volume of data related with a job identifier based on the storage table.
