<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic document feeder for enabling double-sided scanning and single-sided scanning with improved convenience. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Based on whether or not to use a reversal mechanism(double-sided scanning or single-sided scanning), whether or not to insert a document subjected to image scanning between documents already placed on a discharge tray and the discharge tray is switched. Thereby, only one kind of discharge tray is used, while preventing the order of pages for a plurality of documents placed on a document tray from being different from that for the plurality of documents placed on the discharge tray. Accordingly, it is not necessary to check on which discharge tray a document is discharged.
