[Class 42 (ii)] In a measuring machine in which the indicators are returned to zero by the shortest possible route, such as is described in Specifications 387,358, 396,777, and 396,812, when a new measurement is to be made, the units indicators 44, 47 are zeroized jointly by a spring 105 and a cam 98 acting on an eccentric pin 103 on the indicator shaft 50 or a shaft connected therewith. The pin 103 has some free radial movement to prevent jamming. The cam 98 has two substantially straight operating forces 98<a> meeting in a slightly rounded re-entrant angle 98b. The cam 98 is moved about its pivot 99 by the end 96 of a rod 81 connected at one end 80 to a crank arm 79 on the knife lever shaft 59 and near the other end to a link 83 pivoted at 84. A rod 108 pinned to the rod 81 and guided by a pin and slot 110, 109 engages another eccentric pin 112 to start the motion of indicators should they have stopped on a dead centre position. When the knife lever is released the rods 81, 108 and link 83 return to the positions shown in Fig. 3 and withdraw a projection 87 from below a lever 92, a tooth 93 on which engages the wheel 42 and positions it ready to receive the single tooth of its driving wheel 39.
