<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cordierite ceramic having a high porosity and a low thermal expansivity and its manufacturing method in order to improve the performance of the cordierite ceramic as a main component of a honeycomb-structured catalyst carrier which carries a catalyst for cleaning exhaust gas from an internal-combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: The cordierite ceramic having high quality levels such as a porosity of ≥25% and a thermal expansivity of ≤0.30×10<SP>-6</SP>/°C wherein the cordierite crystals are oriented in a specified direction is manufactured by optimizing the degree of disordered lamination and the particle size of kaolinite which is one component of a raw material for producing the cordierite so as to introduce microcracks with an average value of ≥0.3 μm in width into the obtained cordierite ceramic. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT |
