<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve restarting of an engine without using a glow plug 18 of an automatic stopping device of diesel engine which automatically stops a diesel engine when predetermined automatic stopping requirements are met and restarts the engine when predetermined restarting requirements are met. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The automatic stopping device opens/closes an intake valve 26 and an exhaust valve 27 to exhaust the new air taken in by cylinder engines 14A-14D of an engine 10 through an intake passage 28 into an exhaust passage 29 at the beginning of an engine stopping process from the supply of fuel to the engine 10 being stopped until the engine 10 actually stops by an intake/exhaust valve movement controlling section 103 that controls the movement of the intake valve 26 and the exhaust valve 27 by valve activating means 26A, 27A, and closes the intake valve 26 and opens the exhaust valve 27 during the intake process of each of cylinder engines 14A-14D at a later stage of the engine stopping process.
