<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus wherein deviation between an apparatus body and an original cover is prevented. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus includes an original cover 13 openably/closably supported by an apparatus body 42 via hinges 46, 48 and reads an image of an original placed on an original platen glass 16 covered by the original cover 13 in a closed state. In this case, positioning pins 54, 56 are provided to one of the apparatus body 42 and the original cover 13, pin holes 58, 60 to which the positioning pins 54, 56 are fitted when the original cover 13 is closed are provided to the other, and at least two sets of the positioning pins 54, 56 and the pin holes 58, 60 are provided. Further, the positioning pins 54, 56 and the pin holes 58, 60 are provided in the vicinity of the hinges 46, 48. In the two sets of the positioning pins 54, 56 and the pin holes 58, 60, the pin hole 58 of one set is a round hole, and the pin hole 60 of the other set is a long hole.
