<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tungsten carbide based sintered body having high hardness and excellent abrasion resistance, and elongating the life of a tool in a high-speed cutting of special alloy such as titanium alloy and a steel material. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This tungsten carbide based sintered body consists of 0.1-2 wt.% of 1 type or 2 types selected from chromium carbides and vanadium carbides, 0.1-1 wt.% of iron group metal, and the rest being tungsten carbide and inevitable impurities, wherein tungsten carbides consist of WC and W<SB>2</SB>C, when an X ray diffraction peak intensity of the surface WC(101) is expressed by IWC(101) and an X ray diffraction peak intensity of the surface W<SB>2</SB>C(101) is expressed by IW<SB>2</SB>C(101), an X ray diffraction peak intensity ratio IW2C(101)/(IWC(101)+IW<SB>2</SB>C(101)) is 0.2-0.3.
