<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium enabling high density recording, and a simple manufacturing method of the magnetic recording medium. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a vertical magnetic recording medium in which at least an underlayer, magnetic recording layer and protection layer are laminated on a nonmagnetic substrate in this order, the magnetic recording layer is formed of at least a plurality of magnetic layers and an exchange coupling control layer, and the exchange coupling control layer has a physical pattern formed thereon. The magnetic recording medium manufacturing method for manufacturing the magnetic recording medium includes at least an underlayer formation process, a magnetic recording layer formation process and a protection layer formation process. After depositing the magnetic layer, and then forming the exchange coupling control layer patterned on the magnetic layer, the magnetic recording layer formation process forms the magnetic layer thereon.
