<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible for each user to attach an electronic signature only to the part in an electronic document for which the user has responsibility. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An area specification receiving section 20 receives a specification of a signature area from a signer on the display of an electronic document. A signature attachment section 22 extracts the document data of a specified signature area from the electronic document, and attaches an electronic signature to that document data by using a secret key 16 of that signer. Signature element data of an electronic signature thus attached include signature area data indicating the signature area, a signature value of the electronic signature, and certificate data for verification. When a verifier designates a verifier apparatus 40 to verify the signature of the electronic document, the verifier apparatus 40 verifies the signature for every signature area by using the signature area data, signature value and certificate data in each signature element data attached to the electronic document.
