The system (200) comprises a gas temperature module that determines temperature of gas within cylinder (112) of an engine (102) after cylinder is deactivated. A slip module determines predetermined slip value based on temperature of gas and adjusts slipping of clutch (248) of a torque converter (120) based on slip value less than predetermined slip value before cylinder of engine is deactivated. An independent claim is included for diesel type engine method.
