PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous metal air battery which effectively prevents the deterioration of a metal negative electrode due to moisture in air. SOLUTION: A lithium air battery 10 includes a lithium negative electrode 16 and an oxygen positive electrode 18 disposed in a nonaqueous electrolytic solution 22. At discharge, a metal lithium is oxidized to produce lithium ions at the lithium negative electrode 16, while oxygen in air is reduced to produce oxygen ions at the oxygen positive electrode 18. The lithium air battery also includes an oxygen pump 32, attached to a cover 30 forming a positive chamber 28 containing a closed space. The oxygen pump 32 is capable of electrochemically pumping oxygen in the air outside the positive chamber 28 into the positive chamber 28, so that oxygen in air can be supplied by the oxygen pump into the positive chamber 28, when the concentration of oxygen in the positive chamber 28 drops due to a discharge reaction in progress. Since the positive chamber 28 is encircled by the moisture-impermeable cover 30 and a dense solid electrolyte 34, moisture in air will not infiltrate the positive electrode chamber 28.
