PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically track a desired AF target and perform an AF control correspondingly when the AF target disappears from a shooting range or appears in the shooting range. SOLUTION: If another registration pattern exists in an image range as well as a selected tracking target in the course of tracking the selected tracking target and if the tracking target disappears from the image range, another registration pattern existing in the image range is tracked. Thereafter, even if it is detected that the tracking target, which has disappeared, appears in the image range again, it is continued to track another registration pattern being the same as above.
