<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical fiber, by which a long glass preform can be housed and drawn into an optical fiber. <P>SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing an optical fiber comprises inserting a glass preform 13 through an upper aperture 12a in an upper cylinder 12 of a drawing furnace 10, heating and melting the glass preform 13 in a heating section 11 and drawing an optical fiber from the lower end of the preform. A support rod 17 connected to a seed rod 15 to which the glass preform 13 is attached is provided with a sealing plate 21 that allows the support rod 17 to penetrate as vertically movable and seals the upper aperture 12a of the upper cylinder 12 and with an air-tight cover 22 that allows the support rod 17 to penetrate as vertically movable, includes the sealing plate 21 as vertically movable and covers the upper aperture 12a. The glass preform 13 is inserted through the upper aperture 12a of the upper cylinder 12; the upper aperture 12a is sealed by the sealing plate 21; and the glass preform 13 is gradually descended and drawn into a fiber while the upper aperture 12a is sealed by the air-tight cover 22. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT</p> |
