<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane separation apparatus capable of surely and efficiently removing suspended solids stuck to the filtration membrane of each membrane element even when the interval of the plurality of membrane elements is narrowed and downsizing is executed, and the filtration membrane cleaning method of the membrane separation apparatus. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The membrane separation apparatus is provided with the plurality of membrane elements having the filtration membrane for filtering liquid to be treated including the suspended solids on both surfaces, the plurality of membrane elements are arranged side by side at a prescribed interval so that the filtration membranes face each other, and while the liquid to be treated is filtered by distributing the liquid to be treated to the filtration membrane from the outside to the inside of the membrane elements, the suspended solids stuck to the filtration membranes are removed by supplying fluid to the membrane elements and distributing the fluid to the filtration membranes from the inside of the membrane elements to the outside.
