<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable compression ratio engine that can be manufactured more compactly. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The variable compression ratio engine 1 keeps a cylinder block 10 movable vertically in a crankcase 20. A position changing mechanism 30, mounted on the variable compression ratio engine 1, includes a screw shaft 31 fixed to the crankcase 20 rotatably around its axis and in such a manner that the axis of the screw shaft is perpendicular to the axial direction of the cylinder, N sliders 32X (X=L, R) screwed to the screw shaft 31, and N slider housings 33X secured to the cylinder block 20. Each slider housing 33X has a slider receiving hole for receiving the slider 32X therein in such a state that the slider 32X does not rotate together with the screw shaft 31. The slider receiving hole extends in a direction established by rotating the axis of the screw shaft 31 at a predetermined angle in a plane containing this axis and parallel with the axial direction of the cylinder.
