<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method and driving device of an optical modulator capable of controlling gradation in lower threshold driving by a degree of a light amount of address light by including the lower threshold driving of a state change from a planer to focal conic such as a threshold shift method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An optical address type optical modulator 1 is formed by sandwiching display layers 7a, 7b including cholesteric liquid crystal and selecting and reflecting light of a predetermined wavelength, and an optical conductor layer 10 between a pair of electrodes 5, 6. In order to record an image on the optical modulator 1, the driving method and driving device of the optical modulator include: a writing step for appropriately selecting and exposing the address light while applying a voltage V, which exceeds a lower threshold when the address light is exposed and does not exceed when not exposed on a display layer 7a, between the pair of electrodes 5, 6, and selecting a portion exceeding the lower threshold and a portion not exceeding the lower threshold; and a pulse voltage applying step for applying a pulse voltage V' by one pulse which has a shorter pulse width than the voltage V and has reverse polarity of a first pulse of a voltage V2 just before operation of the writing process.
