<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain corruption of a plug insulator and resolve smoldering of a spark plug. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An engine (1) determines the degree of progress of smoldering of the spark plug (10) from the rotation number and the load of the engine (1) and adjusts the temperature of an attachment section (10a) where carbon is attached on the plug (10) by controlling the cooling medium distributed inside a head cooling pathway (11) formed on a cylinder head (4) where the spark plug (10) is mounted from the degree of progress of smoldering determined.
