<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an equatorial plane detection method for directly detecting the equatorial plane where optical axis is used as earth's axis in spherical optical uniaxial crystal. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The equatorial plane detection method is an equatorial plane detection method of a spherical member 11 formed of single crystal of the optical uniaxial crystal having birefringence properties. The equatorial plane detection method includes a step of making light come into the spherical member 11 via a polarizer 102, and a step of observing an isogyre 16 constituted by the light coming from the spherical member 11 via an analyzer 107 having a cross nicol relation with the polarizer 102. The isogyre 16 is observed when the vibration direction of the polarizer 102 or the analyzer 107 approaches in parallel with the optical axis 14 of the spherical member 11.
