PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new cyanine compound useful for optical elements, in particular the compound having a sharp light absorption in the wavelength range of 480-500 nm, excellent in lightfastness, particularly suitable for a light absorbent for an optical filter using as an image display device, and to provide an optical filter composed of the compound. SOLUTION: Provided are the cyanine compound represented by general formula (I) and the optical filter composed of the cyanine compound.
