<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cleaning apparatus and a cleaning method, which can suppress the generation of foreign materials from between the sheets on the front-back both sides of a sheet laminate. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A cleaning apparatus 10 cleans the front-back sides of a sheet material 1 in which a plurality of sheets are laminated, and includes an upper side cleaning member 3a and a lower side cleaning member 3b which clean the foreign material on the front-back sides of the sheet material 1, an upper side nipping member 2a and a lower side nipping member 2b which nip the sheet material 1 by cantilever, and a suction nozzle 5 generating an airstream along the front-back sides of the sheet material 1 in a direction substantially parallel to the nipping surface of the sheet material 1 which the upper side nipping member 2a and the lower side nipping member 2b nip.
