PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus which can detect accurately breakouts generated in a slab in continuous casting for molten steel. SOLUTION: Regarding the breakout detection method in continuous casting, a heat flux q1 of heat input to a solidified interface from when molten steel in a mold is at bath level to when it reaches a mold exit, is measured; a steady solidification interface heat input q2<SB>reg</SB>, caused by the flow of the molten steel in the mold in a steady state, is obtained based on formula (1), q2<SB>reg</SB>=h×Δθ; a heat flux profile is obtained for the difference (q1-q2<SB>reg</SB>) between the heat flux q1 and the steady solidification interface heat input q2<SB>reg</SB>from when the molten steel is at bath level to when it reaches the mold exit; and whether a breakout occurred is determined, based on the heat flux profile; wherein, q2<SB>reg</SB>is the steady solidification interface heat input (J/s×m<SP>2</SP>); h is the heat transfer coefficient (J/s×m<SP>2</SP>×°C) between the molten steel and a solidified shell; and Δθ is the degree of superheat (°C) of the molten steel.
