The method involves providing an authentication unit (6) e.g. Java(RTM: object-oriented programming language) applet, in a memory of a smart card (7) e.g. universal integrated circuit card, arranged in a mobile telecommunications terminal (4). An authentication request (6a) of an application (2) is transferred to the authentication unit. The authentication request is examined by the authentication unit, and authentication data (6b) of the authentication unit is transferred to the application as a function of the result of the examination. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a mobile telecommunications terminal (2) a system for authentication for an application running off on a computer.
