摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a lightning strike on an aircraft enabling non-destructive investigation (NDI) inspection to be localized quickly, without advance knowledge of the lightning strike. SOLUTION: The aircraft includes a composite structure and two or more small lightweight pollable communication devices for providing lightning strike detection coverage of a region of the structure. Each device is rendered inoperative if at least proximate to lightning current. The structure which is susceptible to electromagnetic effects includes a main body, and two or more RFID tags mounted to the main body for providing EME detection of the structure. Each tag is rendered inoperative if at least proximate to EME current. A method of analyzing structural health of the aircraft includes processes for interrogating the two or more communication devices which cover respective regions of the aircraft, for identifying the devices which are inoperative, and for identifying arbitrary inspection zones from the inoperative devices.
