<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure indoor comfort by preventing a wasteful defrosting operation by estimating the amount of frost attached to an outdoor heat exchanger during a heating operation by a simple method, in an air conditioner comprising a plurality of indoor units. Ž<P>SOLUTION: Two indoor units 12, 13 are connected to one outdoor unit 11, and a defrosting operation is performed to melt the frost attached to the outdoor heat exchanger 33 during the heating operation. In the defrosting operation, a high-pressure refrigerant discharged from a compressor 31 is supplied to the outdoor heat exchanger 33. In the heating operation, a defrosting operation control section of a controller 60 calculates a capacity index value indicating a capacity of the outdoor heat exchanger 33 by using an evaporation temperature of the refrigerant in the outdoor heat exchanger 33 and a measured value of an outside air temperature sensor 58. The defrosting operation control section determines that the attachment of frost in the outdoor heat exchanger 33 is increased, and starts the defrosting operation, when the capacity index value is lowered during the heating operation.
