<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate the adjustment of the operation timing and the lower limit position of a needle bar by achieving a higher visual recognizability of base lines without reducing the endurance of the needle bar under the dried environment in the needle bar for sewing machines and a sewing machine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The needle bar for sewing machines which is supported by being inserted into a bearing member of a frame of the sewing machine as to be reciprocable in the direction of the axis while being driven to reciprocate by a needle bar drive means is provided with three base lines 22, 23 and 24 marked on the outer circumferential surface of the needle bar 19 for the adjustment of the operation timing and the lower limit position of the needle bar 19. A DLC film 25 is formed in the portions except for the base lines 22, 23 and 24 and the vicinity of them out of the outer circumferential sliding surface of the needle bar 19 with respect to the bearing member 20.
