<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely air-tighten a discharging space, to provide a sealing structure without possibility of rupture or breakage, and to achieve a stable lighting. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In an electric discharge lamp of double sealing structure, a taper-shaped portion thickened toward the sealed tube end part is formed on the end part 24T1 of an electrode side glass tube 24 that retains an electrode support rod 22. Then, the diameter of the end part 24T1 is made larger than that of the other end part 24T2. That is, the diameter of the electrode side glass tube 24 is made larger in the vicinity of a contact face of the inside metal ring 26 and the glass tube 24 than those of the other parts.
